Christina Solmon ... led Tarrant to victory
Defending senior champions Dunoon Park Technical and Tarrant High advanced to the finals of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association ISSA/Digicel Urban Area senior league netball competition
following semi-final victories at the Leila Robinson Courts
yesterday.
In the junior league, St. Andrew High and defending champion Queen's High will meet in the final.
St. Andrew edged Vauxhall 15-14 in a thrilling match while Queen's stopped St. Hugh's High 19-13. The finals will be played on Friday at the same venue.
In the senior league semi-finals, Tarrant, led by national goalshooter Christina Solmon with 16 goals and Samantha Whitter 12, whipped Ardenne 31-14. Dunoon thrashed Wolmer's 36-25.
"It was a balanced performance by my team because we were more focused today and the girls knew what was at stake and they went out there and did the job for us," said Delroy Johnson, coach of Tarrant.
"The final is going to be very tough. We played Dunoon in the first round and we drew 33-33 with them, so it can go either way on the day," Johnson said.
Dominated match
Dunoon dominated their match from the opening whistle and were up 19-12 at half-time. They extended their advantage by two goals at the end of the third period for a 27-18 lead. National Under-21 invitee Crystal Gordon led the way for Dunoon with 32 from 33 attempts.
Gordon received support from Jody-Ann Foreman with four goals from five tries.
C. Lloyd Walker, coach of Dunoon, was delighted with his team's performance.
"The game was an evenly contested one because Wolmer's have some good players. We went out and played hard and the girls stuck to the game plan and we came out victorious," said Walker, who is also the coach of Jetsetters 'A'.
"I was expecting a much better performance from Wolmer's because they beat us in the open rally. We knew that they could have beaten us if we relaxed too much," Walker said.
Winston Wilson, coach of Wolmer's, said his team needed to improve on past performances to win.
"We knew that we were up against the defending champions, so we had to go out there and perform much better than them if we were going to win, but we didn't perform as we expected," Wilson added.
