Councillor Blake empowering youths

The old saying goes that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to catch it you feed him for a life time.

This saying is true about what Keith Blake, councillor for the Independence City division, is doing for a group of youths in his community.

On Friday, November 16, Councillor Blake handed over two weed whackers to youths in the community to do Christmas work, as a form of self-reliance.

Councillor Blake said that the young men pooled $10,000 among themselves to help purchase the weed whackers, and he put up the rest of the money.

The cost of each weed whacker is $42,000, making it a grand total of $84,000.

"This is a revolving scheme, as after these two men make back the money they owe on the weed whackers then more equipment will be bought for other young men to help themselves," Blake said, while adding that similar programmes will be implemented in his division.
