Georges cool Harbour View in U-21 league

League leaders Harbour View had their winning streak snapped yesterday after losing 1-2 to St. Georges Sports Club at the Harbour View Mini Stadium in the Coca-Cola National Under-21 Football League.

Harbour View, who still remain at the top of the standings with 12 points, started the season on a four-game win streak but were surprised at home, just as the senior team was on Wednesday in Portland.

St. Georges first win of the season moved them up to four points and just below mid-table.

In other games, champions Portmore United edged Sporting Central Academy 1-0 at Ferdie Neita Park, August Town and Boys' Town drew 1-1 at the UWI Bowl, Arnett clipped Reno 1-0 at Tony Spaulding Complex, Seba defeated Waterhouse 3-2 at the UDC field in Montego Bay and Tivoli Gardens and Village United also played to a 1-1 draw at Elliston-Wakeland Centre.

Things started off sourly for Harbour View as a defensive blunder in the third minute led to Dennis Neish scoring easily in the six-yard box. In the 18th minute, Harbour View became a man short as Lamar Hodges was red-carded for a mistimed tackle on Neish. Hodges charged in but completely missed the ball as the players' collision echoed across the almost empty stadium.

The Stars of the East continued to soldier on and dominated possession with John-Ross Edwards and Errol Stevens both missing the upright by inches. In the 30th minute, defender Montrose Phinn found the equaliser as Stevens returned a long corner kick into the penalty area which found the head of Phinn.

After working so hard for the equalising goal in the first half, Harbour View started to feel the effects of playing with 10 men. St. Georges also began to play smarter by using shorter passes and finding the open man. Their hard work paid dividends when captain Oshane Dobson struck a sweet volley in the 58th minute from about 30 yards out that left goalkeeper Leon Geoffe grounded. The Portlanders had turned around what was a flat first half into a more confident display in the second period.

"We had too many turnovers in the first half but in the second half, we kept possession of the ball, attacked down the flanks and found the open man," said St. Georges coach Donovan Duckie.

Even as St. Georges looked to put them away with a third goal, Harbour View were just as persistent for the equaliser. The one-man attack of Adrian Fagan failed to produce the goods, however, despite several chances including a clear one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

"We lost our composure in the final third of the game and we weren't doing the things, we were supposed to be doing," noted Harbour View coach Ludlow Bernard.
