BSI probes shootings

The Bureau of special Investigation has launched probes into two police shootings which occurred on Sunday.

The first incident occurred in Seaview Gardens on Sunday morning. One man allegedly died during a shoot-out with the police at Phase One, Seaview Gardens, Kingston 11. An illegal firearm was seized during the incident.

Dead is 33 year-old Lenworth Wedderburn, otherwise called 'Frost', of Greywind Pathway, Phase One, Seaview Gardens.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network's metro officer, about 7:00 a.m., a joint police and military operation was carried out in the Phase One area of Seaview Gardens.

Acting suspiciously

Police say Wedderburn was seen acting suspiciously on Greywind Pathway and they approached him. He, allegedly, fired shots at the team. The fire was returned and Wedderburn was hit during the exchange. A Springfield 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol with five 9mm cartridges was taken from him. He was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In the second incident, a man who reportedly aimed a firearm at the police on the Lucky Hill main road, Gayle, St Mary on Sunday afternoon was shot and killed and the firearm taken from him.

The dead man has been identified as 30 year-old Hylton Douglas, otherwise called 'Shabba', of Jeffery Town, Gayle.

Aimed gun

The CCN's liaison officer for St Mary reported that about 2:45 p.m., an operation was carried out in the Acadia Housing Scheme. During the exercise Douglas was seen at a bus stop.

His actions aroused the suspicion of the police who approached him. However, it is alleged that when they approached Douglas, he pulled a firearm from his waistband and aimed it at the police who opened fire, hitting him.

A Colt .38 pistol serial number EG52584 with six 9mm cartridges was taken from him. Douglas was taken to the Port Maria Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
