Residents of Old Harbour Bay in St Catherine blocked the main road in their community yesterday to protest the alleged police shooting of a man in their community recently.
The man,Vinroy Butler, a 20-year-old labourer, was injured a week ago. Residents yesterday used stones and other debris to show their disgust at what they claim was police abuse on the young man.
"I don't believe that the police deal with the situation right. Him never a no gun and mi never see no shoot-out ... Mi was there and him hold up him hand ... ," remarked Butler's aunt, Jestina Patterson.
Residents claim that despite being shot in the back, the young man was not taken to the hospital by the police. They say that they did so and it was not until the next morning that the police placed him under arrest. They are now demanding that he be taken out of the cell at Old Harbour due to his condition.
The police in Old Harbour told THE STAR that Butler was among a group of men who engaged them in a shoot-out when he was shot. They said that he has been formally charged with shooting with intent and will face the court at a later date. The residents, however, remain convinced that he was shot in cold blood.
