Last Tuesday's STAR highlighted a disturbing problem. The lead story in particular reported that vandalism had already occurred at the newly opened Half Way-Tree Transport Centre.
According to the article, it has been only three weeks since the centre opened, yet there has been a case of robbery and stabbing at the centre. Interestingly, in both incidents the aggressors and victims were young boys.
The article further reported that the students had allegedly defaced the walls, and have even damaged bathrooms. Obviously, we are grooming a generation that will grow up to destroy the country even more.
Clearly, these young people lack appreciation or respect for public property. They fail to recognise that it is their parents' tax dollars that will have to repair the damage they do to public property. They fail to recognise that the money being spent on repairing the property is money diverted from areas that could benefit.
Adults also have a responsibility to do something if we catch the young people destroying the public property anywhere in the island. There is a police post at the bus park and when adults catch youths engaging in this destructive behaviour they should be taken there and forced to face the legal repercussions for their actions.
We need to stop these young people from destroying property, whether at school or on the road. We need to do something to get our youth acting in a less aggressive manner, and developing a respect for all public property. They need to learn that this is a serious act that has serious implications.
