Minister of Education, Andrew Holness, has said that the ministry is moving to tackle the issue of violence is schools by improving security arrangements.Addressing the annual retreat of principals of secondary schools in the Ministry of Education's Region 6, held recently at the Sunset Jamaica Grande in Ocho Rios, Holness said that notices about the new measures will be sent out to the various schools.
"We are looking at a security specialist to come in and advise you as to what are the things you will need to do to improve your security arrangements in your schools," he informed.
He further urged the principals to take note of all incidents of disruptions in schools to help develop a database of potential problem students.
"When you analyse most of the crisis incidents that happen in schools, they all have a history. The problem is that we are not recording the history. We are not noting the markers or the signs," Minister Holness pointed out.
Calling on principals to support the ministry's plans to stem violence in schools, he opined that a positive result could only come from a united approach.
"Let us move on this in unison and strength regardless of what our own views and feelings may be. It is the time for all of us to bond together and move ahead," he stated.
The retreat, which was geared towards improving the professional development of principals, was held under the theme: 'Partnering the Vision for Increased School Autonomy'.
