Seven women charged with being found on the premises of a brothel, among other things, are to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on March 10 when the matter will again be mentioned. The women appeared in court on yesterday and Resident Magistrate Glen Brown set another mention date so that the charges could be sorted out.
On February 1, the women were arrested at a house in Swallow-field, Kingston 5.
They were arrested for breaching the Towns and Communities Act. Angela Chang, 39, beautician of Passage Fort, St Catherine, has been charged with allowing her premises to be used as a brothel. Denise Powell, 22, masseuse of Barbican Avenue, Kingston 7, is charged with prostitution and being found on the premises of a brothel.
Charlene Smith, 22, of Springfield, St James; Trudy-Ann Grant, 22, of Clayton Heights, St Catherine; Keryron Blake, 20, of Tollgate, Clarendon; Chanette Gooden, 24, of Barrette Drive and Rosemarie Williams, 32, all in Kingston, have all been charged with being found on the premises of a brothel.
Police say between 12:30 and 3:30 a.m., detectives from the Organised Crime Division and the Flying Squad carried out an operation at a massage parlour in Swallowfield. The women were found to be in contravention of the Towns and Communities Act and were arrested and charged. Money totalling $28,200 was also seized.
When the matter was mentioned the women's lawyer argued that the women charged with being found on the premises were there of their own free will and this was different from being forced as was stated in the law.
The women's bails were extended until the next mention date.
