Calabar bowl McGrath

Jonique Gaynor, Staff Reporter

Calabar High yesterday advanced to the third round of Television Jamaica's Schools' Challenge Quiz after a convincing win over McGrath High. Last year's finalists took the win with 34 points to McGrath's 15.

Both teams played well in the first section of the match and judging from the performance, one would have thought the match would have come down to a nail-biting finish. Not quite so.

After a judges' review at the end of the first segment, both teams were on nine points, setting the stage for what could have been a very exciting second segment. Calabar performed very well in this section, substantially increasing their points. McGrath, on the other hand, though they started off well, faltered in their second minute when they failed to answer any question correctly.

Their performance in their final minute was better, but still not enough to catch up with Calabar. At the end of this segment, McGrath were on 19, while Calabar were way ahead on 30.

The third section of the match cemented Calabar's place in the third round. They attempted several questions in this section, some of which they answered incorrectly.

Captain of the Calabar team, Rex-Andrew Wright, shared his opinions on the match. He said, "I feel we played a good match. We need to work on our strengths and weaknesses, but it was a fairly good match and we plan to come back better for the third round."

Things fall apart

McGrath's captain, Andre McDonald, told THE STAR, "Basically, what went wrong was that the team cohesion fell apart and we failed to regain our composure. We thought it was a fair match and we want to congratulate Calabar and hope they do well as the rounds progress."

The Calabar team: Ramone Graham, Troy Stone, Rex-Andrew Wright (capt), and Kemar McKenzie.

The McGrath team: Andre McDonald (capt), Lionel James, Paula Honeyghan and Conrad White.

Next match: Titchfield High vs Dinthill Technical High
