FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas (CMC)

Barbadian hurdler Ryan Brathwaite and Jamaican long jumper Nicholas Gordon highlighted a few Caribbean winners at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas last weekend.

Brathwaite won the men's 60 metres hurdles in 7.65 seconds, the best ever at Barton County Community College. He ran a 7.69 last week to tie him for the top spot with Dexter Faulk, but now has that spot alone.

Brathwaite passed Ty Akins, who ran in the Invitational during the weekend, with the best time in college this year and the 16th best time in the world.

Brathwaite's 7.65 placed him third in the Invitational behind a pair of Nike runners - Allen Johnson (7.60) and Joel Brown (7.64).

Gordon continued his fantastic freshman season for the University of Nebraska against one of the nation's best collegiate fields as he won the long jump.

Gordon, last year's Carifta Games silver medallist, won the collegiate division of the long jump with an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 7.56 metres.

Overall, Gordon's mark placed him fourth among college athletes competing at the Tyson Invitational.

Triple jump

Gordon has now claimed a first-place jump in every meet he has competed in this year. He won the long jump at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational (7.57), while winning the triple jump at both the Conference Challenge (15.22) and Adidas Classic (14.89).

There were also wins for Bahamas' triple jump champion Levan Sands and Jamaica's Michael Blackwood, Nickesha Anderson and Kenia Sinclair.

Sands won the men's triple jump championship with 16.73 metres while Blackwood, a former Commonwealth Games' 400 metres champion, took the top spot in the men's 800 metres in 1:49.72 minutes.

Sinclair completed the double for Jamaica in winning the women's 800 metres invitational in 2:01.41, with Grenada's Neisha Bernard-Thomas finishing sixth in 2:04.71.

Anderson of Kansas University won the 200 metres in 22.94 seconds for an NCAA automatic qualification with Kittian Virgil Hodge of Texas Christian University finishing third in 23.33 seconds.

Earlier, Anderson and Hodge had to settle for sixth and eighth positions, respectively, in the 60 metres dash. Another Jamaican, Samantha Henry of Louisiana State University (LSU), was third in that event.

In other results, Osborn Moxey of the Bahamas was second in the men's long jump with 7.75 metres while Jamaican freshman Kimberly Williams of Florida State University was fourth in the women's long jump with 6.03 metres.

Another Jamaican, Andrea Linton of LSU, was fourth in the women's triple jump championship with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 13.41 metres.
