One of the front page stories in yesterday's
Gleaner spoke of a police sergeant who allegedly ran from his fellow officers when they moved in to arrest him after witnessing him receiving a package from a taxi driver.
Even more disturbing, however, was the fact that the officer reportedly pulled a firearm at the lawmen before running off. The fact that this sergeant was willing to sacrifice his job for a measly $20,000 from a desperate taxi driver is indeed very sad.
The behaviour of some of our officers is so disgusting and disgraceful that it is easy to understand why so many people have lost respect for the police force. Though there are still some decent officers in the force, the bad apples have managed to tarnish the reputation of the entire group.
In order to earn the respect and cooperation of the public once more, those in charge need to take a serious stance against corruption. Simply saying 'we do not condone corruption' is not enough, and people need to see serious, visible changes that really punish those who are found to be indulging in questionable practices.
These things are getting out of control and something needs to be done sooner rather than later.
