Accused extortionists remanded

Three men accused of extorting money from a worker at Digicel earlier this month were remanded when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Jermaine Walcott, Derrick Scott and Donovan McMorris are all charged with extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion. Allegations read in court are that on February 12, Walcott and Scott went to the Digicel offices on Grenada Way in New Kingston, where they demanded money from the complainant.

It is further alleged that on following day McMorris went to the said location and demanded $60,000 from the complainant and claimed that he was sent by 'Dudus' to collect the sum.

The complainant, then made a report to the police who, after investigations, arrested and charged all three men.

McMorris' attorney, who made an application for bail for his client said that the complainant who brought the allegations against his client was trying to divert attention from his own dealings.

Despite his pleas, presiding Resident Magistrate Glen Brown refused the application and remanded all three men.

They are all to return to court on February 28 when the matter will again be mentioned.
