FIX IT - It's now two late

Traffic attempting to go through the stop light at the intersection of Spanish Town Road and Industrial Terrace. - Norman grindley

AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. Now, we will have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.

So far, 2008 has been a good year as we have been receiving favourable responses from the agencies featured. Additionally, many of the issues that were carried from last year have been addressed. Still, two remain unmoved. Oakland Crescent, off Waltham Park Road, St Andrew continues to deteriorate. Although it was scheduled to be repaired last year, which had actually began, a change of government and Hurricane Dean have damaged those plans.

An even longer running issue is the traffic light at the intersection of Industrial Terrace and Spanish Town Road. This it seems may not be fixed this millennium, if at all.

This traffic light, however, is only one of the many out of operation in the downtown area. The lights at the intersection of East Queen and Church streets, along with those at Charles and Duke streets, are noticeably missing. We are asking the National Works Agency (NWA), that while they are synchronising the myriad of lights on Knutsford Boulevard, that they also assess the ones needed in downtown Kingston.
