This section of Kew Road and Ballater Ave. in St Andrew need urgent repairs. - Norman Grindley
AS PART of our mission to be the People Paper, THE WEEKEND STAR has been highlighting problem areas across the island. Our reporter, Carolyn Johnson, along with photographer Norman Grindley, will focus on a particular area until the problem is fixed. Now we will have a rough idea of how long the relevant authorities take to deal with some of the problems affecting our country.
Although we have been trying to avoid road issues for a while, Kew Road, could not be ignored.
From Half-Way Tree, Kew Road off Maxfield Avenue, Kingston 10 is like any other community road, not the smoothest ride, but bearable.
Sinkholes
The latter part of the road that leads to Maxfield Avenue, however, does not deserve to be called a road. When The STAR team visited the area there were large pools of water to wade through to get unto Maxfield Avenue. The depth of these sinkholes we fear to speculate. They are apparently very deep.
Coupled with the pools are the large stones jutting out of the asphalt that make drivers quiver, thinking about their tyres. To compound matters, the only part of the road that seems partially intact has been borrowed by a trucking company as part of its parking lot. With business on either side of the road, Kew Road is both a hazard and a nuisance. This road definitely needs to be fixed.
