Relegation-threatened August Town could install a new coach within a week as former coach Hugh McCarthy resigned on Saturday morning following the final training session in preparation for yesterday's game against Village United.
Dwight Morgan, one of the manager's of the struggling club, told Star Sports following the team's 0-1 loss to Village United that the much-respected coach has stepped down citing his inability to lift the team out of the doldrums.
"He resigned after training in the morning saying that he does not think he can lift the team anymore.
"We did not accept his resignation but he did not turn up for today's game so that is that," Morgan said.
When contacted, McCarthy confirmed that he had resigned but would not go into any details stating that the club got a letter and they could speak on the matter.
"I am not saying that what the club said is so or that it is not so," he responded when told of the reason given by the club, but added that he enjoyed his time at the club.
McCarthy started his coaching season in the League in November following his return from abroad. In his absence Calvert Fitzgerald, who had a short-term arrangement with the club guided them in nine games.
Yesterday, Dominic Spaulding stepped up to the position of head coach but that position is not permanent, according to Morgan.
"Dominic has been appointed for now and it is a possibility that he could be officially promoted.
"We are looking into it because it is hard to get a coach now who could relate to the players and we think Dominic can do that so he has it on an interim basis. We are considering options and should have things sorted out soon, maybe not in time for Wednesday's game but by the following Sunday," Morgan explained.
