Dear Counsellor:
I'm writing with a lot of emotions because my brother's girlfriend died from AIDS three weeks ago. We believe that she has been infected for sometime but kept it a secret. The news has a bad effect on the entire family. My brother refused to get tested and this is worrying because we are just not sure of his status. What are we supposed to do?
Little Brother
Dear Little Brother:
Your brother needs a lot of support at this time. He may not even accept as yet that his girlfriend really died of AIDS-related illnesses or that she was infected and did not tell him. He has a lot of issues to deal with. You can help by encouraging him to speak with a knowledgeable counsellor. In time he will get tested. I must encourage you to continue to support your brother and perhaps you need to speak with a counsellor as well so that you can have a clearer understanding of what your brother is going through.
HIV cure from a healer
Dear Counsellor:
I'm a woman in my late forties and I have been living with HIV for the past eight years. Recently my mother encouraged me to visit this man (a healer) who she said has helped a lot of people who were suffering with AIDS to feel better and some he has even cured. Counsellor, his treatments cost a lot of money and I know I want to feel better but will the treatment really help? What do you think? Should I take it on a trial basis? Counsellor I should also tell you that I'm on the HIV treatment programme, but if there is something out there better I want to know.
Living with HIV
Dear Living with HIV:
As far as I know there is still no known cure for HIV the virus that causes AIDS, however, many people infected with HIV are exploring different ways to manage their infection in addition to their regular medical routine. Acupuncture, herbal therapies, massage and meditation are just a few of the alternatives available. I strongly believe that before you take any of these treatments you must have a discussion with your doctor.
