Accused dangerous driver granted bail

The driver of a car which allegedly collided with six cyclists along Port Royal main road, killing one was granted bail on Wednesday.

Derrick Reid, 35, a fisherman of Neptune Avenue, Kingston 17, appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to charges of causing death by dangerous driving and having no driver's licence or insurance coverage.

After a bail application from his attorney at the court pro-ceedings, Resident Magistrate Glen Brown granted Reid $100,000 bail with surety.

It is alleged that on March 22, about 7:15 a.m., some cyclists were riding along the Port Royal main road towards the Norman Manley International Airport. On reaching a section of the road, six of the cyclists were hit by a Toyota Sprinter motor car registered 2637 BG traveling in the opposite direction.

Lawrence Watson, 47 of Great House Close, Cherry Gardens, Kingston 8, died on the spot. The others, Adrian Chambers, Gene Lee, Patrick Chin, Delroy Gordon and Ernest Moodie, all of Kingston addresses, were all injured.

The matter was set for mention on May 30.
