Legalise ganja?

Marijuana weighing about 300 lbs was found in Ewarton, St. catherine last year. - Ian Allen

We're back! THE STAR poll is here once again and dare we say, better than ever. We 'hit' the streets with all the juiciest questions about sex, obeah, music, religion and much more, and now we're ready to give you the results. Prepare to be shocked and amused like never before.

The debate about whether marijuana should be legalised has been raging for years. There are some who believe the use of the drug should be decriminalised and that people should be allowed to use small portions for personal use. Others however, think the use of the drug should remain illegal and say legalising the use of marijuana would be sending the wrong message about drug use.

We wanted to find out how people feel about the issue, so we asked:

Do you think the smoking and growing of ganja should be legalised in Jamaica or should they continue to be against the law? Here's what we found out :

Legalise - 47%

Continue to be illegal - 47%

Don't Know - 6%

The respondents seem to be split on this issue, as the same percentage of people that would want marijuana to be legalised, also want it to remain illegal. It is interesting to see the views split so evenly, however, and this shows that the topic is indeed very heated and has many supporters as detractors.

The poll was conducted on January 28-29 by Johnson Survey Research Limited

Sample size: 1008 residents
