Nelson returns with three-timer

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

CHAMPION jockey Omar Walker fell a neck short of STAR Sports five-timer prediction last Saturday, losing the third race aboard Neive Graham's MICHAEL POWER, beaten by HEART'S CRY with Lenroy Ricketts astride.

However, Walker did everything right aboard his other four STAR Sports bankers, CALL OF THE WILD, TOUCHDOWN, LITTLERICHBOY and CHADMAN.

Trevor Simpson chipped in with a four-timer of his own including 7-1 shot GREAT SENSATION in the eighth, the first of two outsider to rock Super-6 and Pick-9 bettors on Saturday.

However, not even SAMMY OH SO's 9-1 win in the following event was enough to shake off determined bettors with 450 winning Super-6 tickets, each worth $7,131.

The big Pick-9, which started the day with a carryover of $2.8m, returned $179,455 to 26 winning tickets.

Both jackpots are back at there $500,000 and $1m guaranteed payout marks tomorrow afternoon on what appears to be a challenging 11-race card, which has the Super-6 starting at the fifth and Pick-9 at the third race.

Leading riders Walker and Dane Nelson are the riders to watch on tomorrow's 11-race card. Nelson, who is back from a brief suspension, has a three-timer in his crosshairs, QUICKSTER in the second before opening the Pick-9 with back-to-back wins aboard THUNDER STORM and LADY WALES, all over 1000 metres straight.

QUICKSTER was outduelled at 1000 metres round on last but should benefit from Nelson's aggressive riding style to make all the running.

THUNDER STORM was noted making late headway, finishing five and a quarter-lengths in seventh place behind FIRST TIME LUCKY at the distance on last and should mow down $270,000 claimers.

Super-fit

Nelson should wrap his three-timer with LADY WALES, who stormed home at the distance on April 16 but failed by a head to nail LITTLEREDCORVETTE.

Walker, who sits out front in the jockeys' standings on 49 wins, 10 ahead of Nelson, should get the Super-6 rolling with super-fit CHOSEN ONE at 1500 metres after scoring consecutive victories at 1000 metres straight aboard the back-to-form seven-year-old gelding.

The leading rider is also fancied aboard the American-bred EXPLOSIVE PEAK, who goes up against hot three-year-old, SUPER DAVE, in the 10th at 1000 metres straight.

SUPER DAVE, partnered by Simpson, is up in class among Open Allowance company after comfortably beating TOBAGO and CHADMAN at 1200 metres two weeks ago.

However, the speedy colt was never tested on the lead and had things his way, shaking off TOOT DI HOOT and DANCING SAM before slipping away from rivals.

Now pitted against EXPLOSIVE PEAK, who is at her best over the straight and favourably drawn along the stands' side, SUPER DAVE will have to prove his worth against the quick filly.

Walker should seal a quick double with Wayne DaCosta's three-year-old, LITTLEREDCORVETTE, who plunges down the claiming ladder to $220,000 in the Clifford Stewart Memorial over 1200 metres.

LITTLEREDCORVETTE had no chance sprinting against CHOSEN ONE at 1000 metres straight two weeks ago, but should hold her own for less than half the claiming price among much older horses, having beaten three-year-old maidens as recently as April 16 at 1000 metres straight.
