BALTIMORE, MARYLAND:

HAMPTON University female team and Norfolk State men took top honours at the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships which came to an end at the Morgan State University campus on Saturday.

Hampton scored 123 points as Maryland Eastern Shore finished runner's up with 118 points while on the male side Norfolk tallied 162 points.

The three day Championships which saw three Jamaicans copping double titles was highlighted by the performance of Hampton University junior, Francena McCorory. McCorory who missed the Indoor Championships in February due to a motor vehicle accident, and who two years ago ran faster in high school than the college athletes, posted an impressive 51.54 seconds to break an 18-year old record of 52.10 seconds set by Howard University's Michelle Felder.

Fastest among

The time posted by McCorory was the second fastest among collegiate athletes in the United States this year as only University of Southern California's (USC) Carol Rodriques, who posted 51.39 seconds on the same day at the Drake Stadium, has gone faster.

Hampton University, who were winning their third consecutive Championships and six overall, got great contribution from Jamaican Racquel Vassell. Seventeen year-old Vassell, who is a freshman, contributed 32 points to her team's success. After finishing third in the long jump on the second day with a leap of 5.82 metres and the 100 metres hurdles on the third day in 14.02 seconds, she returned later to cop the sprint double.

She first won the 100 metres in 11.69 seconds before returning to win the 200 metres in 23.50 seconds. She also ran the second leg for her team in winning the 4x400 metres relay. Vassell who will be hoping to make Jamaica's World Junior team to Poland in July was named the female M.V.P of the meet.

Former G.C. Foster College athlete, Mereccia James, now competing for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and who has dominated middle distance events in the conference and who was the indoor M.V.P in February, tallied 28 points after winning two events and finishing second in one. She captured the 1500 metres in 4:39.56 and the 5,000 metres in 18:43.60, while finishing second in the 800 metres in 2:12.36. Her teammate, Celia Whyte, formerly of Holmwood Technical, took the 800 metres in 2:11.08 and she was also third in the 1500 metres in 4:41.11.

After her double success at the Indoor Championships, former Morant Bay High School standout, Kimona Smith continued her good form outdoors by capturing a double. Representing North Carolina A&T University, Smith had a personal best of 13.01 metres in the triple jump and won the long jump also with 6.24 metres.
