THE EDITOR, Sir:
Please let me share a portion of your column to speak to the relevant authority responsible for the Morant Bay market in St Thomas.
The sanitary conveniences is in a very deplorable state. There are four sections, two for males and two for females, but two spaces are closed and, because of such, people have to be waiting more than usual time.
I am also informed that the general public uses the same facilities as the town of Morant Bay does not have public sanitary conveniences. The place called the urinal is also a health hazard; the smell coming from it is very offensive.
I believed the Public Health authorities should take a look at the condition, and make a ruling for immediate action to correct the situation.
Let's move on to sections within the market. There is only one working pipe with water in the area called 'Butcher's Stall'. I am not too sure if that's the proper term, but that's where the butchers stay while they cut and sell their meat.
But to my surprise, there are about three other pipes within the same area, but none of them is working. I asked someone dressed in uniform, 'why they do not repair the broken basins'? His reply was that the people break them up (basins) faster than when only one basin in use. I believed the bad state of the market is due to lack of proper supervision from the top to the bottom.
Now let's talk about the roof of the building. There are several areas that leads water on to the floor, and on to vendors' stalls. They put plastic on the stalls but it need more than that.
There is a section that needs a gutter to receive the water, coming from the roof, into the manholes. I am not charging for my ideas, but I am asking for urgent attention to remedy the bad condition at the market. Thanks.
I am, etc.,
