When Dwayne Stewart appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding his child's mother.
Stewart told the court that he and the child's mother once lived together but had differences and had separated as a result.
He said one day, the child who is four, became ill, but he had no money to take him to the doctor. Stewart told the courts that he invited her to his house to assist him with some money. She met him at the bus stop instead.
Stewart said while at the bus stop, they got into an argument and he made an attempt to stab her because he was upset. He said she attempted to run and he threw the knife at her and it caught her in the upper back.
When the complainant spoke, she said she and Stewart had been separated for more than a year. She said she knew how short-tempered he was and that was why she decided to meet him at the bus stop and not at his home.
RM Glen Brown then turned to Stewart and said: "What a wicked act! You could have killed the lady. Should I send you to prison, and for how long?"
Stewart was remanded in custody until May 19 for sentencing.
