Work to start on council complex

Rasbert Turner, Portmore Star Writer

Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds, said that within the next week work is set to start on a state-of-the-art complex that will house the Portmore Municipal Council.

Hinds, who was addressing members of the Portmore Chapter of G2K, on Wednesday, said the modern facility will house a 1,000-seat theatre, a tax office, a commercial bank, a credit union and a university, has asked for 100 square feet for a campus.

"Portmore is on the rise and we are planning to make people work and feel good, so we need a better environment for these types of activities," Mayor Hinds said.

He added that for several years the Portmore Municipal Council has been operating from its current Portmore Pines address with high rent attached and this needs to stop.

He told the gathering of young professionals that the new facilities will occupy 300,000 square feet on lands near the Portmore Police Station (100 man) and is expected to be built at a cost of US$120 million and is to be completed within 24 months.
