Pornography has long been part of our society, however not many of persons have ever thought about how easy it is for children to have access to or purchase it.
The Gleaner's lead story on Thursday reported just how easy it was for a child to purchase the material. The first-hand experience offered by a reporter in an accompanying article was also quite alarming.
She recounted how she went to Half-Way Tree and purchased a copy of a Passa DVD, which had parental advisory sticker on the front and also purchased a copy of a pornographic film. In addition, she was given a bonus copy of any DVD she wanted by an adult vendor who asked no questions.
The fact that she was in uniform was a clear indication to the vendor that she was underaged, yet he did not refuse the sale.
Our society is clearly losing its moral standards, a point made clear by the fact that porn can be accessed so easily by children on the streetside.
The children are the most vulnerable, yet adults, even those who are not the parents or guardians, have chosen to take a stand-off approach to guiding our youths.
Adults do not seem to recognise that they are potential role models for young people and as such have a duty to behave in a responsible manner.
The society is degenerating; however, if our adults can see our children breaking the law or engaging in risky or dangerous behaviour without reprimanding them, then our society is facing a very bleak future.
