No messing around - Rivoli gunning after Meadhaven in NPL play-offs

Ainsley Walters, Freelance Writer

RIVOLI coach Anthony Thompson yesterday said there would be no messing around when his team faces joint leaders Meadhaven tomorrow afternoon in what should be a hot Premier League qualification play-off match-up at the Rio Cobre field in Spanish Town.

Pole position

Rivoli clubbed York of St Thomas 4-1 on Sunday to take pole position, on goal difference, in the four-team standings over Meadhaven, who edged Wadadah 2-1 at Constant Spring.

However, Rivoli did not get rolling until the second half, going in 0-0 at the break before outclassing the homesters, who are down to face Wadadah at Jarrett Park in tomorrow's other game.

Thompson described the match as "one of the worst" for his team, which he accused of "joking around" with York.

"We have to be better on Wednesday. It was one of our worst games," he said.

"A bad win is better than a loss but we have to come out and show we're more experienced, not like when we went to St Thomas and took the game like a joke thing.

"We can't just say we're more experienced, we have to approach it as Rivoli and Meadhaven," said Thompson.

"We have to know it's the Premier League play-offs and we have to start acting like a Premier League team from now," the Rivoli coach warned.

"If we can win this match, we can see where we're going, but Meadhaven must be saying the same thing," Thompson added.

Meadhaven's Alrick Clarke, who is better known for his exploits with Norman Manley High in schoolboy football, yesterday acknowledged Rivoli, which played in the Premiership three seasons ago, would be tougher rivals than Wadadah.

Not worried

However, the ever-smiling Clarke, said he was not worried about facing the Spanish Town side, which has several seasoned Premier League veterans in its line-up.

"We're not really worried about who we're playing was but it's gonna be a difficult game," he said.

Meadhaven's youthful team were all over Wadadah on Sunday, taking a 20th minute lead but was not defensively sound against the men from Montego Bay, who netted an equaliser shortly after conceding the opening goal.

Rivoli, beaten just once this season, in the first leg of the South Central Confed final, will be tough to beat at home and could punish Meadhaven in Spanish Town.

On target

Dwayne Hunter, Devon Hodges, Derrick Planter and Fidel Anderson were on target for Rivoli on the road and will be burning to give Spanish Town much to cheer about as back-to-back wins would put them halfway into the Premiership.

Meanwhile, Wadadah should beat York to rekindle their chances.

"We definitely have to win," said coach Delroy Delliser after losing to Meadhaven on Sunday.

"Two teams have already won and we have to be the next one winning," he added, pointing out it was the first time his team had travelled in a while and would be better at home.
