A Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier and two men suspected to be linked to the killing of two police corporals on Labour Day, were among five persons who have been shot and killed in separate incidents in Spanish Town, St Catherine since last night.
In the other incident, five people were shot, two fatally, while they stood at a shop.
Reports are that about 1:50 a.m., a joint police/military operation was being conducted in the Westmore Gardens area of Johns Road, Spanish Town. Upon reaching Lot 23 Wildwood Close, gunmen reportedly fired at the team.
Gun battle ensued
The fire was returned and during the ensuing gun battle 34-year-old Oral Pinnock, a lance corporal of the JDF, who was a part of the operation, was reportedly hit.
Two men, whose identities are being withheld pending further investigations, were also killed during the shoot-out.
The police are further reporting that two illegal guns, which were taken from the unidentified men, have been sent for testing to determine if they were linked to the murder of police corporals, Cornell Grant and Delano Lawrence.
The two lawmen were ambushed as they carried out a foot patrol on Third Street in the volatile community of Trench Town in the Kingston West police division on Labour Day.
Since the incident, the men alleged to be involved in the slaying of the corporals reportedly fled the community because residents, as well as other gang members, have been condemning the attack.
The other two persons killed last night were murdered at a shop in Eltham Park. Dead are 23-year-old shopkeeper, Matthew Harper and 49-year-old Clinton McMorris, while also injured in the incident are three men, all of Eltham Park addresses.
Reports are that about 11:15 p.m. all five people were in a shop when a black motorcar drove up. The occupants reportedly opened fire on the group of men.
They were rushed to the hospital where Harper and McMorris were pronounced dead and the others admitted in stable condition.
