A father and a mother were convicted for aiding and abetting the carnal abuse of their 13-year-old daughter who recently gave birth. The parents were deemed to have had knowledge of the incident but failed to report the crime to the authorities.
The investigating officer, Corporal Kiffra Bent, of the Point Hill Police Station, outlined that the child recently gave birth. She said the father and mother were aware of the incidents but did nothing to alert the police to the matter.
In his defence, the father said, "I did not know I should report it and, when I found out, I let the mother know."
The mother agreed but told the court that she spoke to the parents of the man who impregnated the teen and they agreed to take care of everything financially.
Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar chided the parents for their carelessness and told them they were only interested in money. They were subsequently sentenced to 60 days each at hard labour.
