Holmwood athlete spared in fatal traffic accident

Petra Fanty - file

Holmwood Technical athlete and national representative, Petra Fanty, was spared the worst after she was involved in a traffic accident in Manchester that has so far claimed the lives of two of her schoolmates.

Dave Anderson, part of the successful coaching set up that has garnered six consecutive wins at the annual Boys' and Girls' Athletic Championship, confirmed that Fanty is nursing injuries sustained from the accident but was happy those injuries were not considered life-threatening.

"I spoke to her and, though obviously traumatised, she appeared OK," said Anderson, who confirmed that it was nerve-wracking when he heard the extent of the news.

Fanty won gold as part of Jamaica's Under-17 sprint relay team at this year's Carifta Championships and represented her school at the Penn Relays, last month. At Champs in March, she ran the lead-off leg in her school's superlative win in the female 4x400m relay.
