All about Super Dave

by Jimmy, Star Racing Writer

PHILIP Feanny's SUPER DAVE's creditable fifth-place finish in the May 24 Lotto Sprint for Grade One horses makes him a winner for this Saturday's Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame Stakes, a Grade Two event over 1200 metres.

Down to carry 50 kilos, SUPER DAVE should go a kilo overweight for Trevor Simpson but should still have his main seven rivals beaten as they re all too heavy to stop the speedy three-year-old colt.

Running with 48.0 kilos in the Lotto Sprint, SUPER DAVE chased tearaway leader RIGMAROLE down the backstretch before eventual winner MEDICAL REPORT relegated him to third.

Feanny's runner was far from disgraced, staying on for fifth, three and three-quarter lengths behind MEDICAL REPORT, MUSICAL MAESTRO and SMOOTHABILITY in a bang-up finish.

RIGMAROLE returns too heavy with 56.0 kilos, going a half-furlong longer ROMEZ, FREE FALL and PASSA PASSA all seem too heavy at 57.0, 54.0 and 55.0 kilos, respectively.

The day's secondary feature, the 2000-metre Ren Gonzalves Memorial Cup, should be won by Wayne DaCosta's GOOD COMPANY, who now looks ready to give his best effort after competing at distances way short of his best in his last two races.

Seemingly primed for the Overnight Allowance event, GOOD COMPANY was almost a nine-length winner the last time he ran the distance among Overnight Allowance horses.

Fair efforts

His next three races among tough Grade One and Open Allowance runners were fair efforts between January and March this year before returning to the class in unlikely sprint races in May.

A good pacer, who placed third behind MAJOR MAYER and MIRACLE MAN in the Superstakes last November, GOOD COMPANY should return to winning ways at his pet distance.

Track Price Plus Pick-6 players should look to DIABOLICAL KID in the fourth, SANTA ANITA GIRL in the sixth, POWER CRACKER in the seventh and TAKE FIVE in the eighth to round off their bets.

DaCosta's American-bred DIABOLICAL KID got a bad start on debut but closed well behind stablemate RACING MACHINE at 1100 metres on Labour Day. He has looked strong in the mornings at exercise, breezing three furlongs in 34.1 on Monday and returns treated with lasix for the 1200-metre event.

Down-in-class SANTA ANITA GIRL should prove too good for $180,000 claimers at 1400 metres. She's as sound as a bell, racing four times in May in higher classes. Pushed down in class among lesser horses, SANTA ANITA GIRL, who finished six lengths behind BADJEROS ROSE at 1500 metres a month ago, should now score a win.

Close those bets with POWER CRACKER, who has worked too good to lose the seventh at 1400 metres, galloping a mile in 1:44.1, whereas TAKE FIVE may be coming off a five-month lay-up but has always been better than the bunch she will race against in the eighth at 1100 metres.
