Still Walters run deep - Man gets nine-month suspended sentence for alleged assualt

Gavin Walters barely escaped jail time when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to answer to assault charges.

The court was told that Walters, 21, hit his child's mother in the face. The complainant however, told the court that it was much worse.

No peace

She said her relationship with Walters ended about eight months ago "and from dat time till now, no peace."

She said the accused beat her on several occasions and she reported it to the police, but they were unable to locate him. The two share a child but did not live together.,

She told the court that on the last occasion, the accused removed a window pane to gain access to the house she was sharing with her father. She said he entered her bedroom and covered her nose while strangling her.

Her father, who was awakened by the shuffling sounds, broke off the door and Walters ran. She said she had to seek medical attention because she was spitting blood and had blood clots in her eyes.

Lenience

Walters' mother pleaded for lenience on his behalf, telling the court that she had apologised to the complainant.

He was sentenced to nine months imprisonment at hard labour, suspended for a nine-month period. His mother also paid the complainant $10,000 on her son's behalf.
