Gospel artistes call on God

Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter

DJ Nicholas - Peta-Gaye Clachar

With the continued rise in crime and the breakdown in morality, gospel artistes are urging society to turn to God.

When THE STAR spoke with DJ Nicholas the Star of the Month, he said there were several things he would discontinue if he had the authority to do so.

"I woulda ban a lot of things. I would ban go-go clubs and come down hard on prostitution. I would ban explicit songs from the radio and television and I would ban blue movies," he told The STAR.

"I think nudity is too blatant in society. I would enforce Christian principles over the entire country. That's why I would shut down the things that don't line up with the word of God," DJ Nicholas said.

DJ Nicholas is not alone. Other gospel artistes, such as Omari, also see the need for change.

Omari, who sings Help, believes moral decay is more evident among the youth as many of them get caught up in illegal and immoral activity.

"A lot of young people are looking quick money. Nobody is really interested in working hard. Young people nuh fear God and for them it's do or die. They don't have a greater appreciation for life. Dem nuh fear death, it's either you kill me or me kill you," said a passionate Omari.

Poor parenting

He says this problem can be blamed on poor parenting, especially the fathers who are not playing their parenting role. He says there are other problems as young women dress 'half-naked' and sexual intercourse occurs anywhere, even on the buses. In addition, he says people are too 'hot-headed' and have no self-control.

He says the youth learn from the previous generation and the societal problems will only get worse if some drastic measures are not taken.

He also believes that people will have to work with the Government and police to improve the current conditions in society. He says the Church also needs to play a greater role in solving society's problems.

"The Church haffi play dem role more. We (the church) tend fi segregate wi self from the world. It (the Church) should be something tangible so that people can feel it. We have to go out of the four walls and into society," he told THE STAR.

The Church was also high on the agenda for Jason Mighty who said young people need to go to church.

"Young people nuh go church anymore. When mi a grow up not one Sunday nuh pass and mi nuh go church. The church teach you principles," he said.

Slackness

He added, "We (young people) are going to be the head one day but people don't want to do things that are right. It slack! Yuh can't talk to dem. If you tell dem anything, dem tell yuh 'bout yuh mother."

He says he has a problem with the lewd music that is played on the air and how open sex issues are is in music and society.

"Only God knows how to correct the wrong, so we need to look to Him. Jamaica has the record for the most churches per square mile and that is not by chance. We need fi stop look pon the golden calf but look back to God Almighty who is the creator," Jason Mighty told THE STAR.
