Man pleads guilty to assault to avoid trial

A man accused of assaulting the woman he had 'on the side' was fined in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Kelvin Ashmeade, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, was fined $10,000 or 30 days for slapping the woman in her face.

The accused told the court he and the complainant had been in a relationship for a few months and one day while watching television he saw her on the dancehall channel, so he ended things with her. He said his common-law wife found out about the relationship and started to call and text the complainant.

He then said the complainant went to his house and threw a stone which broke several items inside. He saw her days later and asked her about the incident. He said she tried to walk off and he held onto her, but he did not slap her.

The complainant said she went to the house to tell the girlfriend they were no longer together, but the woman told her several obscene things and threw water on her. The complainant said she threw a stone and it hit a picture frame.

Senior RM Glen Brown told the accused the matter must go to trial as he denied hitting the complainant. But Ashmeade said that he did not wish it to go so far and pleaded guilty. He was then fined.
