The Jamaica Urban Transit Company Depot in Spanish Town, St Catherine was the scene of a gruesome murder about 5 p.m. yesterday, when chairman Douglas Chambers was shot and killed by unknown assailants.

The incident occurred shortly after a meeting when Mr Chambers went to the entrance of the complex on Michael Manley Drive. He is said to have left to purchase cigarettes when several explosions were heard.

He was taken to the nearby Spanish Town Hospital, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, where he died.

Several investigators from the St Catherine North police division processed the scene where several spent shells were picked up.

While no motive has been established for the killing. Chambers is said to have been a controversial figure. And several workers who spoke with The Star, echoed this view.

"Yeah man him dead, but he wasn't really a nice person. Him love fi show up him colours and mek nuff people lose dem wuk. But mi really nuh like how them kill 'im still as it is still a life that dem tek," said a conductress from the company.

The meeting, The Star learnt, was to finalised a list of workers who would be sent off by the company. Many persons did not take kindly to this and the police said they will be conducting further investigation to bring the killer(s) to justice.
