A detective sergeant of police who is accused of accepting money from a woman to destroy the ballistics report in a illegal possession firearm case which he had investigated, has been granted bail in the sum of $200,000 with a surety.
The policeman is Dennis Arthurs who is charged with a breach of the Corruption Prevention Act.
It is being alleged that in May this year he made arrangement with the girlfriend of a man who is facing gun charges to destroy the ballistics report for a fee.
The woman allegedly paid him $50,000. It is further alleged that he made a demand for $100,000 more and the woman made a report to the police. A sting operation was set up on May 4 and Arthurs was held.
Attorney-at-law Peter Champagne in making the bail application said Arthurs had no knowledge that the complainant was connected to the man who was facing the firearm charges.
He said Arthurs and the woman were involved in an intimate relationship.
Senior Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar granted Arthurs bail for him to return to the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on July 22.
