Lawlessness

The early morning attack on Shalman Scott, former mayor of Montego Bay and Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) executive, is a clear indication of the lawlessness that has taken over our island.

This attack comes just a week after the murder of JUTC chairman, Douglas Chambers. It is a shame to see such brutal attacks on two public figures and these incidents show that there is widespread disregard and disrespect for the laws of the land.

It is becoming increasingly clear that drastic measures need to be implemented to curb the problem of crime, and it is about time some controversial avenues are considered. The laid-back approach that is being taken by the Government must stop, and simply condemning murders and expressing regret is not enough.

Citizens can do more

Though we expect more from those in charge, however, it must be emphasised that the citizens of the country can do much to help themselves. The police have made several appeals for people with information about murders to come forward, and in many cases, these appeals go unheard. It is time for us to stop protecting criminals, because as we can see, no one is safe from the reaches of crime.

Are we to simply sit back and allow our freedom to be compromised and fear to control our lives? Is it that we are giving up and allowing criminals to think they can roam free? A very strong message needs to be sent, and it needs to be done now.
