Swing By flops in Cozier Sprint

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC)

The Jamaica-bred 2007 Horse of the Year, Swing By, flopped in Trinidad and Tobago's Derek Cozier feature Saturday as the four-year-old gelding Storm Street ran out a good winner.

The US-bred Storm Street came from behind and won the US$16,459 Derek Cozier Mem-orial Sprint by 2-1/2 lengths under leading jockey Ricky Jadoo for trainer Glen Mohammed and owners Dachin Racing Stables.

The four-year-old Sweet Alex led the 1100-metre sprint early but had no answer to Storm Street's finishing burst.

Jadoo roused his mount for a strong run down the home stretch and after surging past Sweet Alex, comfortably repelled a late challenge from Personal Encounter to flatten the five-horse field in one minute 05.00 second.

Storm Street won ahead of Personal Encounter under Venezuelan jockey Luis Rod-riquez, with Ready Set Jet a further 5-1/2 lengths back in third spot.

Swing By, on her 2008 season debut, showed good early speed but faded badly and finished last.

At the Jetsam Awards just under a month ago, Swing By was unchallenged as 2007 Horse of the Year after logging five wins in the season, including big victories in the WITRA Classic and President's Cup.

Swing By had raced in Jamaica as a three-year-old, winning the 2006 Jamaica Fillies Guineas and Jamaica Oaks at Caymanas Park before moving to T&T later in that season.

Champion jockey Brian Harding scored just one victory on Saturday's card and failed to gain on Jadoo, who logged a double.

Harding won the 1200-metre second race with Highway Runner by half-length in one minute 08.60 second.

Jamaica-bred horses Silent Reproach and Montego Magic scored wins on the eight race card.

The three-year-old colt Silent Reproach won the 1100-metre fourth race under jockey Heribert Martinez by 3-1/4 lengths.

Bred — Royal Minister out of My Lady Silk — by Lakeland Farms Ltd in Jamaica, Silent Approach clocked 1:53.40 in victory.

Montego Magic dominated the 1350-metre eighth race and won by 5-1/2 lengths under Jadoo.

The three-year-old colt, bred — Alisios out of Deja Vu — by Gladstone Bell, stopped the clock at 1:23.40 in his victory.

Jadoo's two wins widened the gap in the jockeys' standings to 10. He now has 35 wins to lead Harding (25) with Keishan Balgobin in third on 22 wins.
