'Domestic amputation' case goes to court

A St James man, who allegedly chopped a hand off his teenage cousin, was remanded when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to answer wounding with intent charges.

Twenty-nine-year-old Marvin Bernard of Garlands district, was charged after he severed the teen's left hand and inflicted other wounds to him during a family dispute.

Allegations are that on July 1, the complainant put on a pair of slippers belonging to his younger brother, which resulted in an argument between an aunt and the grandmother.

It is alleged that after the argument, Bernard locked the complainant in a section of the house and used a machete to chop at him.

The complainant used his left hand to block the chop and the hand was completely severed. He was further chopped on the other hand and head.

In a bail application before Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry, attorney-at-law Lambert Johnson spoke with notes of sympathy and regret on behalf of Bernard.

It was stated that the complainant had disrespected his grandmother, who raised Bernard, something that the teen was reprimanded for several times.

RM Henry denied bail stating that she believes that the accused could interfere with the complainant and that the offence was a serious one.

The case is scheduled for mention on July 31, as the court awaits a medical report in relation to the extent of the injuries sustained by the complainant.
