Detective's murder condemned - 'Criminal elements are determined to disrupt the work we are doing ...

Detective Inspector Harper was shot dead by gunmen along Moreton Park Terrace, Cassia Park Road, Kingston 10, about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night. Reports are that he was approached by two men on foot armed with handguns.

Struggle

It is believed they were attempting to rob him when a struggle developed. During the tussle, the inspector was shot in the abdomen. He managed to draw his firearm and a shoot-out ensued. Both gunmen ran off in the area surrounding the Cassia Park gully. One of the gunmen was bleeding and is believed to have been shot.

In a release issued by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the commissioner said Inspector Harper's murder was "one which I abhor in the strongest possible term and one which I mourn deeply". He added, "His murder demonstrates the need for all of our members to be vigilant at all times as there is no doubt that criminal elements are determined to disrupt the work we are doing to maintain law and order."

Detective Inspector Harper, who is the sixth policeman to be killed since the start of the year, was stationed at the Scene of Crime Department and was a scene of crime manager with the Major Investigation Task Force.

Reward

A reward of up to one million dollars will be issued from the JCF's 'Save the Cop Fund' for the arrest and charge of persons involved in Detective Inspector Harper's murder.

One of the men being sought is of dark complexion, medium build and about 186 centimetres tall. He is believed to be between 25-30 years old. He was wearing a red T-shirt and a green and black hat. The other is short, about 168 centimetres tall, of dark complexion, medium build and is believed to be in his early 20s. He was wearing green and black camouflage shirt and pants.

Persons with any information about the killers should call the Major Investigation Task Force at 924-9848 or 922-5344, Crime Stop at 311 or Kingfish at 811.
