A US man has become the first in the world to give birth.

Thomas Beatie, 34, gave birth to a girl at an Oregon hospital on June 29. Beatie was originally born a woman but, after surgery and hormone treatments, lives as a man. He legally became a man 10 years ago, but kept his female reproductive organs.

The baby was conceived through artificial insemination, using donor sperm and Mr Beatie's own eggs.

Beatie said: "The only thing different about me is that I can't breast-feed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't."

Beatie lives with his legal wife, Nancy, who is unable to conceive because of a previous hys-terectomy. The couple are legally married and run a T-Shirt printing business.
