Six months for failed export

Tino Gray will have to spend at least three months in jail for his failed attempt to export marijuana to Barbados.

Gray appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to answer to charges of possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana. He pleaded guilty to possession and attempting to export the drug, but told the court he was not a dealer.

Denied landing

The court was told that Gray, a 28-year-old construction worker from Trelawny, had flown to Barbados but was denied landing. When he returned to Jamaica, his luggage was searched and four pounds of marijuana was found in a false compartment. When cautioned, he reportedly said: "A fi mi, mi jus a try a ting."

He was fined $6,000 or six months for possession, admonished and discharged for dealing and fined $19,000 or six months for attempting to export the drug. In addition, he will have to serve a mandatory three months in jail.
