Henry, Ziadie claim five at Calder

Jockey Wesley Henry

MIAMI, Florida (CMC)

Jockey Wesley Henry and veteran trainer Ralph Ziadie picked up two wins each as Jamaica's racing men claimed five wins on Saturday's card at Calder racetrack.

Former Calder champion rider Jermain Bridgmohan was also a winner on the 12-race card. Henry, an ex-Jamaica champion jockey, and Ziadie teamed up to win the US$27,000 first race over six furlongs with Trippi's Greatstar in one minute 12.85 seconds. Trippi's Greatstar, the 5-to-2 second favourite, took control down the backstretch and held on well down the home stretch to win by 1-1/2 lengths over the 3-5 favourite Exe. Ziadie then won the US$25,000 second race over six furlongs with his three-year-old filly Fancy Stepper.

Going off as the even-money favourite under jockey Manuel Aguilar, Fancy Stepper won easily by four lengths in 1:12.63 seconds. Ziadie now has 12 wins and is eighth in the trainers' championship table, which is being led by his son Kirk Ziadie on 23 wins, stalked by Edward Plesa (19) and Daniel Hurtak (19).

Henry got a second win on the card when he pushed the favourite Defendyourself (7-5) to victory in the US$16,000 eighth race over six furlongs. He brought the four-year-old filly from behind and snatched victory by half-length in 1:14.23. It was Henry's 18th win of the season and he is just outside the top-10 riders at No.11.

Manoel Cruz leads a tight race with 58 wins, one ahead of Pascacio Lopez (57) with Javier Santiago third on 52 wins. Also holding a top-20 spot is Venezuelan, Wilmer Galviz, who rode for several years at Trinidad and Tobago's Santa Rosa Park. The 2005 T&T champion is 14th with 14 wins after scoring a victory on Thursday and two wins on Friday.

Bridgmohan used a well-timed ride to win the US$22,500 fourth race over five furlongs with After the Applause at odds of 7-1. Held off the early pace by Bridgmohan, After the Applause was driven forward in the middle of the track inside the last furlong and got up in time to win by a head in 59.72 seconds. Bridgmohan has 11 wins to be 16th in the jockeys' table.
