Who ever thought they would live to see the day when people defecate and urinate on church grounds will definitely now know they are here.
The front-page story of The Star on July 24, highlighted how a few people in Mandeville had made a churchyard their favourite spot to relieve their bladder and bowels of bodily refuse.
These shameless people sometimes urinated on the church grounds in full view of church members. And, if chided by these members, would verbally assault them with robust words. Of course the members of that church are fuming mad, as they should be.
The gross acts speak volumes of the level of respect that some people have for the church, both the physical structure and the collective body of Christians. There is no way that someone who paid attention in Sunday school could stoop in a churchyard and create a 'mess'. The reverence for God instilled in them at the little pews would not allow for this.
The bottom line, no pun intended, is we need to do way better as a Christian society.
Irrespective of the denomination, a church is a church and for a nation with the most churches per square mile in the world, let us hope the rest of us retain what respect for churches we have left. Lord knows there would be an awful lot of cleaning up to do if we went down that path as well.
