Soldier killed in accident

A member of the Jamaica Defence Force was killed and a police corporal injured after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed on the Nelson Mandela Highway, in St Catherine, on Friday night.

Dead is Garrick Samuels, 27, of Up Park Camp, St Andrew, while injured is Corporal Petrina Smith, attached to the Kingston East Police Division.

Reports from CCN are that about 11 p.m., the two were travelling in a white Toyota Platz motor car, driven by Samuels along Nelson Mandela Highway when, on reaching a section of the road, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence. Both persons sustained multiple injuries and were taken to hospital where Samuels was pronounced dead and Smith treated.
