Lover implicated in woman's death charged

Steven Causewell, who has been implicated in the death of a female companion Nordia Mitchell, at Oaklands Apartments in Constant Spring, St Andrew, was charged with murder yesterday, hours after his lawyer brought his detention to the courts.

Acting Deputy Superintendent Altamouth Campbell, who is in charge of crime, at the St Andrew North Police Division, confirmed that the accused was charged. Causewell is to appear in court on Monday.

Causewell's attorney filed an habeus corpus application in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday indicating that his client should be released or charged as he has been in police custody for over two weeks.

Question and answer

In the application, the lawyer said the last time he came before the court with a similar application, the police said they would have to do a question and answer session before charging him. The attorney noted that this was done on Tuesday afternoon, yet his client was not charged.

Senior RM Glen Brown made an order that Causwell be placed before the court by Monday.

Causewell was taken into police custody after the death of Mitchell, 28, who was found dead in the Oaklands Apartment complex on the morning of July 16. Her body was found with bruises and signs of physical injury. This confirmed reports that she had been involved in a physical altercation with her male companion.

It was widely reported earlier that Mitchell had been thrown from the window of the apartment building. However, police have since denied this, noting that there is no evidence of this.
