Two police constables from the Denham Town Police Station were each granted $100,000 bail with surety in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday. They are also to report to their commanding officer twice per week.
Constables Shane James and Kemar Campbell were charged last weekend for breaching the Corruption Prevention Act.
The lawyer representing James debated that he would not be a flight risk and he will not try to run from the law. Resident Magistrate Glen Brown then said, "Unless you can substantiate the claim, I am not going to pick up the claim, you must have credible evidence."
The clerk of the court told the RM that the case has to be mentioned again since there are still outstanding statements left to be presented to the Crown. The cops were told to surrender all their travel documents and a mention date is set for August 15.
The two constables were held during a sting operation last week.
It is alleged that the constables tried to extort $500,000 from a motorist after ammunition were found in his car and the motorist reported the matter to the Half-Way Tree police. A sting operation was set up.
