No hard feelings - Simpson, Stewart delighted with silver medals

BEIJING, China (CMC)

Olympic 100 metres silver medallists Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart said yesterday that they were elated by Jamaica's clean sweep of the top spots in the women's event.

Simpson and Stewart clocked 10.98 and could not be separated at the tape as they followed home the irrepressible Shelly-Ann Fraser, who was timed at 10.78 seconds.

"I feel good. I'm really happy that Jamaica could have got the top three in the 100 metres. It (the race) was very fast but I'm so happy Jamaica was able to get the top three," Simpson said.

Stewart added while she was disappointed, Jamaica's historic accomplishment had given her reason to smile.

"When you come so close to the gold, there's always a sour feeling but when Jamaica get one-two-three, what can you say about that?" Stewart added.

A heavy pre-race favourite, Stewart had a sluggish start but explained she reacted to what she thought was a false start.

American track officials later lodged a protest, claiming that Torri Edwards had false started but the race had not been called back. The protest was eventually turned down.

"I thought there was a false start but that's where I should have stayed in my own race and waited until they called back the race. But the race is over, I just have to put it behind me and move forward," Stewart said.

Simpson praised Fraser but noted she was extremely happy with winning silver.

"She (Fraser) has been working hard, both of us and I think just the better person won," Simpson said.

"But I must tell you, coming into this Olympics it was real rough for me so just to come out with a silver medal, I'm so happy."
