On Saturday night, Kemar Myers had a date with an 'angel' when he had dinner at Café Aubergine, with D'Angel, May's STAR of the month.
Dressed in a mini, off shoulder leopard print dress with black band at the waist and shoulders complete with purple stilettos and a black sequinned clutch, almost every head turned when the artiste and her date met in the courtyard of Market Place and then walked to the restaurant. One waiter commented that God must be missing an angel.
Guided by their waiter, the couple headed to the restaurant's top room. As he moved the French doors, the couple stepped into the small, elegant room. The room was romantic, dimly lit with a candle on each table, and classical music setting a relaxed mood.
"I'll be back here, this restaurant is nice, quiet. I like the ambience," D'Angel said as she took in her surroundings. Both echoed the same sentiment at the end of their meal, garden salad (D'Angel), pork tenderloin (Myers) and pineapple crepe for desert.
As they waited on the main course the couple munched on garlic bread and bruschetta which D'Angel thought was very good. After inviting Myers to have some, he too agreed.
As they started chatting, Myers kept referring to his date as Miss Downer. A little bothered, D'Angel requested he simply call her Michelle. With formalities out of the way, his first question was why he was chosen. Before they could get to that, however, his girlfriend called to speak with D'Angel.
"Good night, I'm good," D'Angel said, then started laughing. "That's ok, I'm good", she said ending the call. They then called his mother who also wanted to speak with the artiste. "Hi mommy, how are you? I'm your son's date for the evening," D'Angel said. Laughter. "Thank you. Alright. Take Care". With that out of the way they settled down for a pleasant evening, raising their glasses of Merlot, in toast, to a "long life and friendship".
Getting back to the question, D'Angel explained that she chose Myers because he seemed the most humble of the entrants to the STAR'sWin-a-Date competition. "You were not all up in the hype. You adored Michelle Downer, not D'Angel".
Turning the question on him, Myers said he started noticing D'Angel, who he believes is now the biggest female artiste in Jamaica, when she did Downtown Girl Living an Uptown life, though he specifically remembers what attracted him. "I kinda like the thing you did have on, the shorts and something, and den me did like the car", he said.
The conversation then moved to their lives, ambitions, current jobs, and families. Both played sports in high school, was the youngest child in their families, getting "beat-up" regularly. They laughed and talked all night stopping only to take bites of their meal. They moved from fashion, to shoe size, to the media.
When Myers told D'Angel he'd be very interested if he were not engaged, she reminded him about "Mr. Davis", pointing out that she was still a married woman. This was the gateway to relationships when Myers asked her about her marriage. "We'll see," D'Angel said. "I'm not gonna rule out giving my marriage a second chance." However, she said that her focus was now on her son and career.
As they left the restaurant, Myers told THE STAR he thoroughly enjoyed his date. "It was more than I expected and I really expected a lot with a fabulous companion. Always looking gorgeous and she take de cake. Like I told her, if I wasn't engaged."
D'Angel was adamant she had picked the right person and the right restaurant.
