Many children tend to skip breakfast in the mornings for various reasons. However, with the advent of another school term, parents must begin to realise the importance of aiding children in 'breaking their fast' after a good night's rest.
Usually, a child who misses breakfast would literally have gone hungry for at least 12 hours, since he would not have eaten anything after dinner and nothing before lunch.
Solve problems more easily
Research has shown that children, who regularly eat break-fast, think faster, clearer, solve problems more easily and are less likely to be irritable. It is also important to ensure your children eat a healthy breakfast during school days, as teachers tend to focus on critical thinking subjects, such as mathematics, early in the mornings.
Eating breakfast ensures that your children consume more vitamins, minerals and less fat and cholesterol. They will have more strength and endurance, better concentration throughout the morning, will be able to control their weight and have lower cholesterol, which eventually reduces the risk of heart disease.
Better concentration
Research has shown that once children miss the essential vitamins of a healthy breakfast, it is difficult for them to make up for those vitamins throughout the rest of their day. They may also feel so hungry during the day that they end up snacking on the wrong foods such as those high in sugar.
According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast are more likely to have better concentration, problem-solving skills and eye-hand coordination. They may also be more alert, creative and less likely to miss days of school.
If you are pressed for time in the mornings, mentally prepare breakfast from the night before. Have your children know that you will be preparing breakfast and work out a schedule for both of you to get up on time. You must also ensure that children understand the importance of eating breakfast. Allow them to help you in planning healthy breakfasts and follow a regular routine so that it becomes a habit in your household.
