A policeman, accused of accepting $3,000 from a motorist to do away with a traffic ticket, was granted bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
Constable Omel Malcolm and his co-accused, fish vendor Carlos Robinson, appeared before RM Glen Brown.
The court was told Malcolm was a part of a team carrying out spot checks when the complainant was issued with a $10,000 ticket. It is alleged that Malcolm told the complainant that if he paid him $3,000 he would dispose of the ticket. It is alleged that Robinson was working in league with the policeman and was reportedly asked to collect the money and the ticket on his behalf.
A sting operation was set up and Malcolm and Robinson were arrested.
An attorney representing the policeman however told the court that he was innocent and that it was another officer that had made the arrangements. He said his client was mistaken for that officer. He said the constable had never been suspended in his seven years of service to the force.
Another lawyer who spoke on behalf of Robinson told the court that he had nothing to do with the act. She said "something was just passed off on him" and he was "far from the action".
Malcolm was granted $50,000 bail and both are to return to court on September 12.
