CENTER STAGE with Black Queen

Stage Name: Black Queen

Real Name: Semonie Giles

Birth Date: March 4

Which High School did you attend? St. Andrew Technical.

How did you get started in the business?

Mi always a do it (music), it has always been a part of me. I was even in a band at Greater Portmore but, as years go by, friends and family started to push me to do it. But it was really Computer Paul, who encouraged me.

What has been your greatest challenge in the business yet?

Being a woman in Dancehall, it's very difficult being a female artiste in a business that mainly focuses on the men.

What have you been up to lately?

Well, I have a lot of tracks coming out, jus recently completed the video for Roll Wid Me, which will premiere next week. Recently, I did a show called 'Back to School Beach Party', and I'm also working on my album.

Do you look up to any specific artiste?

Yeah, I look to a lot of artistes but the main ones are Bounty Killer, of course, because a him buss di most ghetto artistes. Beenie Man, the wickedest performer the world has ever seen. D'Angel, di way she stand up for herself, and Macka Diamond for always working, and mi love dat cause I'm a person like dat. Internationally, Barbara Streisand and Anita Baker.

Are you happy with the way things are going for your career right now?

Yeah, in some way. I find that the harder I work, the more doors open, a lot of things coming my way now. More doors have been opening for me now and I'm happy about that.

Anything you'd like to change about it?

The fact that I'm maybe a little too laid back, I need to be more aggressive.

What are your future plans?

Right now, by December, mi name must deh pon every list. Mi nah go put mi self inna a box and do music, that everybody can listen to, whether old, young or middle-aged. I want to keep the Queenship cause that's naturally me.

Do you have any advice for young artistes coming up?

First of all, nothing good comes easy, you're going to have obstacles. Don't think you should go into music because of the flossing. Always believe and put God first, Without him, you're nothing. Stick with it, even when it's hard. Most people jus see it for the glitter and glamour. Music is like yuh baby, yuh haffi nourish it and continue learning about it and always remember to be yourself.
